Bees knees
Acrylic and mixed media painting on poplar floating panel, 500mm H x 1200mm W, 2015.
Agriculture day has long been a special day in the Clevedon School year. Students learn about looking after others by raising and then showing their animals. It is a fun competition and you can never tell how each animal will perform on the day. As Clevedon continues to evolve I hope we remember to cherish our points of difference.

This painting is influenced by many years in hospitality. It contains an urgent moment in a narrative. The rooster screams for more eggs and the chicken is deciding how to react. The chickens are the actors on stage, yet we are left to wonder what happens next.

Growing up I always enjoyed passing the local Umupuia Marae and looking up on the hills to spot the Belted Galloway. Recently moving back to Clevedon and thinking about its ever changing future I was struck by the symbolism of the black and white strips on each animal. Recently when I visited the marae to ask permission to draw these beautiful animals, it was confirmed that they were always intended to stand proudly on the hill as a symbol of biculturalism.

Many children wish for a pony. Often you start off with an obsession for riding toy ones first. You may then start running round the yard with a skipping rope wrapped around your sisters waist to practice trotting. Sometimes you are lucky enough to get your first pony and the love for these beautiful animals takes over.

People have long documented their experience and appreciation of animals. This work was inspired by being amongst these two donkeys and their constant movement. By montaging animals and surrounding steep hill landscape I hoped to trace existence much like the early cave painters.

Title: Beauty and the beast Description: Beauty and the beast’ is a painted diptych that was created in response to moving to the country, where physical tasks made me question my position on the roles we take. I have been influenced by New Zealand Feminist painters Sylvia Siddell and Jacqueline Fahey, as they too have been inspired by their surrounding environments. The subject matter of a vacuum cleaner and a chainsaw, symbolise gender norms and question their relevance in today’s world. These everyday objects take on lives and can be seen as people duelling and or one person’s internal gender battle. I have used typical male and female colours to play and mixed the balance. The title alludes to the fairy tale story, but in this open ended narrative the beast is the vacuum cleaner, which plays the part of irrational powerful woman whilst the chainsaw is the calm male antagonist. There is no resolution just a constant push and pull between the two, as they fight for roles, power and balance. Katie Blundell 2015 |

Title: Plus Everything Description: “The pocket knife is a symbol of order, planning and protection. The juxtaposition of the sink and the lifejacket begs the question, what do you need these objects for? The modern women must indeed be prepared for any situation but it is in the plus shapes gaps, the empty space, the unplanned lived experience that we can explore what we value. most.” Katie Blundell Artist 2015

Artist Statement
When I recently returned to my home town of Clevedon with my family, I was surprised to see other people I grew up with were doing the same. I think being able to draw people back, is a great reflection on this community and beautiful little town. At the same time I noted that the Mallard ducks in the pond at the bottom of the garden also kept coming back. They raise their families from their own lived experience and try to teach and guide their babies to fly just as I aim to.
